CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Paige really let AJ's words to sink in before responding.

AJ slept right before the murder occurred, and he is reprogrammed.

Even though he told her not to read to much into it, she couldn't see how not to. Only two bizarre things that were occurring on the spaceship were happening at the same time.

Coincidence?

Paige hoped so.

“AJ...” she started, but honestly, she didn't know how to finish that sentence.

“I told you I didn't do it,” AJ remained adamant.

Paige took a deep breath. “And I already told you I believe you,” she said slowly, allowing him to see that she meant it. “But we have to figure this out.” His behavior was not normal, not that any of this was normal since they had the Black Mass inside them.

“Paige, there's something else I need to tell you.”

She braced herself before nodding for him to continue.

“I...”

There was a distinct sound of static as if someone was testing a radio.

“What's this button for?” Peter's voice could be heard over it, and that made Paige and AJ stop their conversation.

“It's for the radio?” They could hear a one-sided conversation. “It's on?”

“Where do you think he is?” AJ asked, looking around himself as if expecting to see Peter appear out of thin air.

“I have no idea,” Paige replied honestly.

“Everyone on Genesis can hear me?” Peter continued enthusiastically, and Paige cringed, hoping the captain wasn't hearing this somehow, though there was a fat chance of that happening.

“Hello, my name is Peter,” he started seriously. “And I want to be a pilot when I grow up.”

AJ and Paige looked at one another. “He's at the flight deck,” they said almost simultaneously and started rushing toward it.

“I have an older brother Dave, but he is with the aliens now. I live here with my friend Tilley, AJ, Paige, and Paige's mom, Angela. We never see her around, but she is funny.”

Paige doubled her speed because Peter appeared very talkative today, and she dreaded what he could say next.

“AJ and Paige like to sneak out on their own when nobody's looking. I think they are boyfriend and girlfriend,” Peter announced and started snickering.

Oh no, Paige groaned inwardly. This was precisely what she was afraid of.

There was a pause, which could only mean someone was asking him questions.

“It's ok, but I don't like the food here that much.”

Once they arrived at the captain's area, AJ and Paige paused in front of the door.

“Should we just go inside?” AJ ’asked.

Paige shrugged and started knocking.

“Enter,” they heard a deep voice replying before they got inside.

Paige previously only saw the cockpit from above, while exploring the spacecraft with Dillon, but being inside was even more impressive. And to her complete shock, two grinning faces of pilots greeted them.

“Paige and AJ, I presume,” asked the first one.

“Yes,” AJ was the first one to recover.

“AJ, Paige!” Peter exclaimed, seeing them. “Look what I got,” he said waving with a small model of the spacecraft they were currently flying on. “And this, too.” He had a small pin on his shirt with NASA on it.
